Letters received, 1811 Dec. 12-1850 Oct. 1.

The McDonough family lived in Hingham, Massachusetts. Thomas, the only son of Thomas and Harriet (Dawson) McDonough, married and removed to Pennsylvania where he was a merchant and banker. His sister Charlotte married Judge Peter Oxenbridge Thacher; another sister, Eliza, married Dr. George Parkman. Many of the letters to Thomas are from his brothers-in-law, who chide him for mismanaging his finances and not providing his children with decent schooling; they frequently sent him money in the form of gifts or loans. A number of the letters are from McDonough's son, Thomas C., who moved to Boston and who was also incapable of earning a living. Some of Thomas C. McDonough's letters to his father concern the genealogical research he was doing in hopes of finding inheritance money. A letter dated 1849 Nov. 28 mentions the disappearance of his uncle, George Parkman.
